Vahdat sisters – Iran
Sufi singing and poetry

The sisters Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat reflect the current evolution of Persian singing. A new generation of musicians, educated in a university way and totally devoted to the artistic cause, expressing the continuity of a tradition faced with identity issues in Iran today. Ancient miniatures and paintings already testified once the vitality of
women's musical practices, in the Court as in public life, and that until the revival of the musical art of the 1850s. This heritage is beautifully highlighted by Mahsa and Marjan Vahdat. These two sisters who decided to sing together, bear, proudly and gracefully, Persian poetry towards new spaces, in a way that is totally free and open. The voices soar and intersect in a maze modal. The nay (literally meaning "reed"), the long traditional flute inhabited by the breath of the mystical Sufi and the dervishes, reflects the spiritual inspiration of this music and follows the flights of these women's voices.
